Today was the last day of school for the Troftgruben homeschool spring 2020.  For 10 weeks Troy and I have maintained a school schedule for the kids.  Most days it went from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.  Some days we started a little late or ended a little early and I admit my energy has lagged the last week or two.  Learning was not required in our district, but it was in our home.  We used the resources from the school for some of the day and then added in our own.  Troy took on geography and Spanish.  I oversaw the work from school and did some recess/gym and lots of baking for Life Skills.

We had virtual tours, science experiments, spelling with Grandma, and the Cincinnati zoo every day at 2 pm.  We started up family devotions and current events.  I am sure we will be missing the Family Sunday School jingle and 10 second trivia on CNN10.  I am pretty sure the learning that occurred in the last 10 weeks would not help anyone pass any tests, but we had structure, kept our minds busy, and learned that polar bears in Canada can go to jail.  We also learned about each other and the learning styles of our kids.

Some days were really tough.  There were days when I was more than ready to be done with school, but we persisted and persevered.  I am proud of everyone in this house!  And today we celebrated the journey of these 10 weeks.  The kids posed for their last day pics.  Teresa even pulled out her backpack to make it official!
Our treat tonight was a cake Timothy dreamed up and the kids helped make.  It was a cookie, oreo, ice cream cake.  It tasted delicious even though there was some ice cream melting issues.

More highlights of the Covid-19 period

I wonder how we will all remember this time years from now.  Will just the good things stand out? Will the tough times be lost?  There are certainly challenges each day, but there are so many blessings too.  I hear it said often that maybe we don't want to go back to the old normal.  Maybe the way things are now is better in some ways.  I value the time I have with my kids and husband, the time I get to bake and have my kids actually help, outings to new places, new traditions.  It will, indeed, be interesting to look back on these days.  For now, here are some pictures of the memories we are making:
Shelby the turtle found down at the creek.  A beloved pet within a day.  The kids wanted to adopt her.  Unfortunately she died shortly after being found.  Other kids had found her too and perhaps it was too much interaction with kids.  We will never know, but Timothy and Teresa certainly grieved her passing.
We have had ample time for family outings.  One was to the river walk area.  Timothy and Teresa had the chance to scooter in the waters of the Mississippi.  It is not every day you can do that...only when the river is high in the spring!

There has been lots of time spent down at the creek.  Timothy and Teresa worked on a joint project to draw a map of the creek.  The work is still in progress and is quite a few pages long!
Another outing to Backbone state park.  We hiked for awhile, had lunch, and then of course found a creek to explore!
And some nights you just want to draw with chalk.  They each drew a likeness of themselves.  Then they decided to put chalk dust in their hair to "dye" their hair.  Creativity!

One of Teresa's school projects was to build a volcano.  We had as close as a praty as we can get when we erupted it.  Two families walked over and kept their distance as the lava flowed.
Another creek discovery was the ducklings.  Timothy wanted to hold a baby, but after our interactions with Shelby I convinced him that a picture would have to suffice.  The ducklings live free and in the wild!
May Day came and that meant a reason to celebrate!  We look for just about anything to celebrate these days.  I made paper baskets and they filled them with trinkets.  We also made cookies to go in them.  The kids loved the idea of "ding dong ditching" when dropping the baskets off!
One more hiking outing.  This time to a county park.  A nice little hike.  A picnic lunch where we shared conversation about favorite Disney memories and were entertained by kayakers trying to avoid fallen trees.  Yes...great memories!
