Happy February

With a new month coming tomorrow, I decided it was time to change from the winter scene on the blog. I know that February does not mean winter is done, but it means that spring is getting a little closer. Today was one of those days that gives you hope. It felt so warm outside (almost tropical!!) with a temperature of 37 degrees.

February is a happy month for other reasons too...
  • The Super Bowl (I am not a big football fan, but if the Steelers win Troy is in charge of a Valentine's dinner...go Steelers!)
  • Valentine's Day...holidays are always fun!
  • Mom's and Brody's birthdays
  • Family vacation at the end of the month
  • Troy does not have to work on his dissertation this month after turning in a draft, so I may even get to see him on his day off (and he might actually get a day off.)
  • After February comes March...my favorite month (not related to my March birthday!)

So Happy February to all. :-)

It's the simple things in life

What keeps a 13 month old happy during the inside days of winter?

Blocks. Knocking over towers is always a barrel of laughs. Recently, though Timothy has discovered that he can push the small cylinder in and out of the square block. Push it out, turn it over. Push it out turn it over. You get the picture! This keeps him quite happy for at least 15 minutes.

The Christmas card box. I stashed all of our Christmas cards in a nice box (thanks Grandma!) with the intention of picking one card each evening to include that family in our prayers. I have been forgetting to do this, but Timothy has found that he really likes the box. He pulls out the cards and letters, looks at them, hands them to me or throws them on the floor. Once the box is empty, he starts putting them in again, tries to stick them on the wall, or files them on the chair. Oh my, what fun!! A big thank you to everyone who sent us a card and helped create such entertainment for Timothy!

Dropping things. How could one not be entertained for hours by dropping things, shoving things off tables or throwing things down stairs? The picture below shows his delight at having just pushed a toy off of his yellow chair.

Stairs are also among the favorites these days. Down and up. Up and down. He does pretty well and even remembers to turn around so his feet go first--well most of the time.

Cold Tricks

The talk of the town lately is that the temperature is supposed to approach 30 degrees this weekend. A 50 degree change is very exciting! But before this happens Troy just had to show off his cold weather trick this morning. When it is really cold you can take boiling water outside and throw it up and watch it freeze and vaporize in midair. The photo is not the best, but it was a neat trick. (Troy thinks it is cool! You cannot see it well, but he has a big smile on his face.)

Positive side to the cold

It is easy to complain about the cold snowy days this winter, but they aren't going away anytime soon. So I thought I would embrace our weather and find some benefits of so many days below zero!
  • As reported on the news, crime decreases when it is so cold.
  • There are no lines at the DQ. (Yes we still eat ice cream when it is -20!)
  • If our freezer broke down, I'm pretty sure we need not worry about any food thawing.
  • A new game...how many layers are you wearing?
  • The cold gives us plenty to talk about.
  • Troy loves the color white--there is a lot of it around.
  • Timothy can't really move in his snow gear, so he is probably happy his mommy can't take him out to play more often.
  • When there is nothing on TV we can always watch the public station that reports the current temperature.
  • More cold weather means more hot cocoa in my new hot chocolate maker. Mmm!!
  • Plenty of opportunities to sing "Oh the weather outside is frightful."
  • It is too cold for any of the snow and ice on the street to melt, so there is none of that messy slushy stuff getting our car dirty.

Indeed, the cold isn't so bad. :-)
